One of the premier colleges teaching applied art.Since 1981 this institute has been affiliated to the University of Mumbai as a college for teaching the B.F.A.(Applied Art), degree Course as prescribed by the University of Mumbai. All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi too has accorded its approval for conducting B.F.A. in Applied Art, Degree Course at this Institute. This Institute has also been permitted by the University of Mumbai to start M.F.A. (Applied Art) Post Graduation Course from the academic year 1988-89.
Sir J J Institute of Applied Art started operations in the premises of Sir J. J. School of Art in 1935 and was awarded independent institute status in 1961. Since 1981 this institute has been affiliated to the University of Mumbai as a college for teaching the B.F.A.(Applied Art), degree Course as prescribed by the University of Mumbai. All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi too has accorded its approval for conducting B.F.A. in Applied Art, Degree Course at this Institute. This Institute has also been permitted by the University of Mumbai to start M.F.A. (Applied Art) Post Graduation Course from the academic year 1988-89. As per the norms of All India Council for Technical Education, University of Mumbai has revised the course pattern to 12+4 years, from the academic year 1998-99. This has been done to maintain course uniformity across the country, also considering the required academic experience of a candidate.
